Manage your code history

Gitte is built around putting commits together with care. Stage or discard your changes line by line, in larger blocks, or a whole file at a time, so every commit holds exactly the work you mean it to and nothing more. It opens straight into your current changes, ready to work.

Beyond that, follow how your project's history branches and merges in a visual graph, organize branches and tags, set work aside for later, and sync with the places your code is stored, all in a clean, native interface.

0.11.013 Oct 2026

This release adds commit-graph and sidebar search, commit trailers and sign-off support, a more powerful amend workflow, and a number of UI improvements and fixes.

New features:

  • Search commits directly in the commit graph, using the same search syntax as the commit log
  • Search by commit ID or ID prefix, and match author email addresses and names
  • Filter branches, tags and remote branches with the new sidebar search (Ctrl+K)
  • Add commit trailers using configurable templates, with per-repository defaults, and sign off commits with your identity
  • Amend now lets you edit all changes from the previous commit, including unstaging changes to remove them from that commit
  • Choose the initial repository view globally or per repository: Changes, Current Branch or Commit Graph
  • Copy the complete commit message with a button in the commit details
  • Display a repository logo from logo.png, logo.gif, logo.jpg or logo.jpeg in the repository root

UI improvements:

  • Improved selection handling in the working copy and stashes views, including reselecting after refreshes and filtering
  • Show the repository name in the sidebar when it is collapsed
  • Reorganised preferences tabs and repository settings for more consistency
  • Refined spacing, compact-mode padding, diff icons and layout handling for long translation strings

Fixes:

  • Fixed “Hunk index … out of range” errors when discarding hunks or selected lines during a rebase
  • Fixed file operations failing or affecting the wrong files when file names contain wildcard characters
  • Conflict diffs are now loaded against HEAD, and status errors are reported instead of appearing as an empty working copy
  • Diffs now use consistent path prefixes even when Git is configured to use different prefixes
  • Fixed failed clone attempts potentially deleting an existing destination folder
  • Fixed resuming a rebase failing when commit signing is enabled
  • Preserve edited commit messages when a history rewrite pauses
  • Merge trailers when squashing commits
  • Squash commit subjects are no longer translated
  • Fixed notification messages displaying incorrectly when they contain characters such as < or &
  • Improved detection of command-line tools on macOS through more reliable PATH handling
  • The commit button is now disabled when committing is unavailable

Under the hood:

  • Updated German and Ukrainian translations
  • Updated dependencies, bundled Git and Git LFS
  • Update the GNOME Flatpak runtime to GNOME 51
0.10.112 Sept 2026

This bugfix release fixes signing in Flatpak builds and adds small UI improvements.

Fixes:

  • Flatpak builds now respect the configured signing program for OpenPGP, SSH and X.509 signatures
  • Git operations now use temporary files accessible to both the Flatpak sandbox and the host system, fixing failures when host programs need to read them

UI improvements:

  • Release dates in the release notes dialog now use a human-readable format
  • The remotes button is now vertically centred when it is the only collapsed sidebar section

Under the hood:

  • Updated dependencies
0.10.011 Sept 2026

This release adds side-by-side diffs, Git LFS and submodule support, signing configuration, remote management, and major performance improvements.

New features:

  • Side-by-side diffs, configurable independently for the working copy and history views
  • Set up Git LFS, manage tracked patterns, inspect its status, and track files directly from the working copy
  • Add, update, sync, configure, deinitialise and remove submodules
  • Add, rename, delete and fetch individual remotes, and delete remote branches, optionally together with their tracking configuration
  • Configure commit and tag signing per repository, including the signing format and key
  • Open the current repository in a terminal with F4
  • Toggle between showing the whole file and only the changed context in diff views with Ctrl+Shift+E
  • Optionally open a repository found in the current working directory when starting Gitte without a path
  • Choose whether a newly created branch should be checked out immediately
  • Add multiple selected files or patterns to .gitignore at once, with one pattern per line

UI improvements:

  • Force a light or dark appearance, or continue following the system color scheme
  • Revamped signing-status dialog with actionable configuration diagnostics
  • New context menus for diff file headers and the item under the pointer
  • Most context-menu actions now support both single and multiple selections in the working copy, commit log and commit graph; unavailable actions are hidden for multiple selections
  • Navigate to the next or previous search result with Ctrl+G and Ctrl+Shift+G
  • Selections in the commit log are restored more reliably after refreshes
  • Commit information now appears directly beside the graph lanes instead of in fixed columns
  • Working-copy filters now clearly indicate when they are active, describe the filtered results, and provide actions to reset them
  • Collapse All and Expand All controls now stay in sync when individual diffs are toggled
  • Removed “Back to Repositories” from the main menu
  • Commit messages and stash details can now be selected and copied
  • Code and diffs now use the system's configured monospace font
  • Sidebar and list pane widths are preserved when resizing the window
  • Commit, merge and revert dialogs adapt their width to the configured commit body line length limit, up to 160 characters
  • Refined diff headers, sidebar lists, compact-mode spacing, and right-to-left presentation

Performance:

  • Much faster commit-graph loading and repository startup, especially for repositories with many remotes and remote branches
  • Diffs outside the visible area are rendered lazily, and large diffs initially render only the first 500 lines until “Show All” is selected
  • Major speedups for batch operations such as stage all, unstage all and discard all
  • Much faster working-tree status and safety checks before rewriting history, especially with large untracked directories

Fixes:

  • Staging selected lines now works correctly when the selection spans multiple hunks
  • Diff views now refresh correctly when hunk headers change
  • Prevented unnecessary diff reloads when refreshing only the file list
  • “Edit Commit” now always edits the targeted commit
  • Rebases now resume correctly after commands that pause the operation
  • Fixed Git LFS detection and a potential pipe deadlock during Git operations
  • Fixed a race condition when loading settings
  • Fixed context menus sometimes opening at the wrong size
  • Clicks and context menus now work across the full row in branch, remote and tag lists
  • Fixed gaps between commit-graph lane lines in compact mode
  • Fixed the update banner and window controls in collapsed-sidebar mode on macOS
  • Fixed detection of executables (Git, GPG, Git-LFS) installed outside the default macOS application environment
  • Disabled “Sync with mainline” on the mainline branch itself
  • Removed remote HEAD pseudo-references from remote branch lists

Under the hood:

  • Migrated many Git write operations from libgit2 to the Git CLI for more consistent behaviour
  • Reduced the Flatpak package size by stripping the bundled Git binary
  • Expanded test coverage and made the test suite report all failing checks in one run
  • Updated Basque, Cornish, Finnish, Slovenian and Ukrainian translations
  • Updated dependencies
0.9.121 Jul 2026

This bugfix release corrects ref resolution when refreshing the commit log and improves detection of authentication failures from modern Git forges.

Fixes:

  • Take the ref kind into account when resolving a ref, so a branch is no longer resolved to a tag of the same name when both exist
  • Recognise more authentication-failure messages from modern forges (e.g. GitHub token rejections and GitLab access-denied replies) so credential errors are reported as such
