GIScan is a simple tool to open and analyze data stored in cbf (Crystallographic Binary Format) files. While GIScan is primarily developed with the analyis of GISAXS data in mind, as obtained by the P03 beamline of PETRA III at the DESY Synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany, it should be compatible with any arbitrary cbf data.

GIScan handles raw data directly and doesn't need any a-priori data reduction. It supports features such as background subtraction, line scans along the Qy and Qz axis, detection of the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of diffraction peaks and coordinate conversion from pixels to reciprocal or angular space.

GIScan is mostly developed with the analysis of multilayers in mind but can be used for any arbitrary data stored in cbf format. If a beamline or datatype (be it GISAXS or GISANS) is not supported and you would like to use this tool, please submit an issue on the Github page so this can be arranged.

1.2.027 Feb 2026

Performance, bug fixes and code quality improvements

  • Update runtimes and dependencies to the latest version on the Flatpak
  • Replace the seaborn styling with bhm, as the specific styling does not come with all versions of matplotlib.
  • Significantly improved performance for scan updates by replacing nested pixel loops with NumPy array slicing
  • Coordinate arrays are now cached and only recomputed when new data is loaded, making repeated scan updates much faster
  • Improved FWHM search performance
  • Added guards to prevent out-of-bounds crashes
  • Fixed an issue on fresh installs caused by a missing dark_graphs entry in the default config file
  • Older config files from previous versions will no longer cause crashes on startup
  • Fixed compatibility with newer versions of matplotlib
  • Various bug fixes and code cleanup
1.1.614 Mar 2023

Super minor update, the units in the sample to detector distance were wrong. At one point I'll streamline the FWHM scan mode as well, but given my schedule next significant update is still a bit away in the distant future

  • Fix sample to detector distance
1.1.513 Dec 2022
  • Updated Flatpak runtime
  • Added symbolic icon
  • Updated icons to vector image
1.1.412 Dec 2022
  • Expanded permissions to home folder for Flatpak version
  • Update screenshots on Flathub
  • Use native filechooser
  • Minor bug fixes and code cleanup
